  How Alzheimer’s Disease brought
Beeswax candles into our life….

When you cant find the light,
That got you through the cloudy days,
When the stars ain’t shinin’ bright,
You feel like you’ve lost your way,
When those candle lights of home,
Burn so very far away,
Well you got to let your soul shine,
Just like my daddy used to say.
- Lyrics from Soul Shine by The Allman Brothers

Hello, I’m Mondy Carter. My wife, Karen and I own operate and do the whole shebang here at Soulshine.

We moved to Black Mountain, North Carolina in August of 2006. Previously For 16 years we lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Karen and I met while performing in a Monty Python Revue and we’ve been in love ever since our first kissing scene on stage (a skit called Buying a Bed).
We were living a macaroni & cheese and peanut butter & jelly existence; piecing together acting gigs painting jobs and teaching.
We were happy. And then one day, more happiness came into our life – a sweet baby girl we named Grace Virginia.
Shortly after Karen’s Dad passed away from Alzheimer’s disease and her Mom, Virginia was diagnosed with the same disease a year later. Karen’s theatre work took a backseat and she started to apply her knowledge of improvisation to training caregivers to give better care. I kept myself busy making commercials, acting on stage and teaching theater to young and old. We wanted Virginia to live with us full time and not just make visits, we realized we needed to move where we had a support network for all of us. We took the plunge and dived into the deep south: Black Mountain, North Carolina.

We came across this beeswax candle company being sold. The owner was moving with her new husband to Alaska and was looking for someone to carry on the torch (or in this case the candle).
We realized it fit us perfectly. We started training with Laura  (the owner of 10 years) in creating beeswax candles, and found out we’ve got a knack for it.

So here we are…
After living such a cerebral, external, frenetic life  pouring  candles by hand and dipping the tapers is truly a joyful experience for us-like a slow float down the French Broad (that’s a large local river and not a large local woman). We feel blessed to have the opportunity to make an environmentally conscious product that’s a pleasure to make and send to you.
And yes…
I still act, do voiceovers and make movies (or commercials or just hyjinx) and Karen is still on the road doing presentations about Alzheimer’s disease.
